Czech-Korean Nuclear Energy and Culture Day in Prague

In mid-June, the Czech-Korean Day of Nuclear Energy and Culture took place at the Žofín Palace in Prague, co-organised by the Korean companies KHNP and KNA, the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the Czech Republic. Josef Perlík, Executive Director of CPIA, also spoke at the event, while Korean companies signed other memoranda with the Czech industry.

Approximately four hundred representatives of state institutions and companies from both countries attended the event and were treated to speeches by distinguished guests, official signing ceremonies and a rich cultural programme.

Speaking at the event, Dr Jooho Whang, Chief Executive Officer of KHNP, said: “Reliability is a key criterion for supplier selection. That is, whether it is able to complete the construction well, on time and within budget. I am convinced that KHNP is the best bidder in this regard.”

Tomáš Ehler, Deputy Chief Director of the Energy and Nuclear Resources Section of the MIT, reiterated the importance of involving Czech companies in the project: ‘The key will be to manage the project on time, within budget and with the highest possible involvement of Czech companies. Early and mutually beneficial involvement of Czech companies will be essential for the success of the project.”

In the course of the afternoon, a signing ceremony took place between Korean companies and sixteen Czech companies, including Doosan Škoda Power, Sigma Group, Reko Praha, VALVEA, Infer, G-Team and TES Vsetín. A total of seven Czech companies have signed a memorandum with KHNP and nine with its Korean partners.

Josef Perlík also thanked for the cooperation between the two industries in his speech: ‘Industry expects long-term cooperation with the selected bidder at the partnership level, i.e. a truly highly interdependent cooperation beneficial to both parties and with the maximum possible positive impact on Czech industry and the economy of the Czech Republic. We see a huge potential in the cooperation with the Korean partner, which, however, needs to be tightened up, especially in the area of turnkey supply of the entire secondary island by the Czech industry and supply of the construction part.”

Cooperation with Czech companies is a long-term priority for KHNP. Since 2016, KHNP has identified over 200 potential Czech suppliers and signed more than 70 Memoranda of Understanding as a basis for future cooperation. The South Korean company is thus seeking to maximise the share of Czech suppliers in the project, as requested by the Czech side.
