EDF has announced that it is proposing to create a Czech-French industrial alliance to export nuclear power on a global level. This “nuclear airbus” would have a major long-term impact on the domestic economy while strengthening the Czech Republic’s political and structural role in building an energy independent Europe.
EDF’s vision is ambitious but very specific: in addition to the four EPR1200 units that EDF wants to build in the Czech Republic, it plans to deliver up to 22 more EPR or EPR1200 units in Europe by 2050. This plan will necessarily require the participation of the Czech industry. It is therefore not just a relationship between customer and supplier, but a long-term strategic partnership.
In addition to this integration of the Czech industry as a top-level strategic supplier in domestic and export projects, EDF and its Czech partners would create a Central European engineering platform in the Czech Republic for regional and international projects, as well as a regional EPR-type operations and maintenance support team.
EDF’s analysis shows that the above scenario should bring roughly CZK 1 trillion to the Czech economy by 2050.
